November Education Session-Safer Communities & Neighbourhoods Act

By Laurie Socha, S.A.M. (Management) Inc.

On November 16, 2004 the PPMA hosted a seminar on the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act. The speaker was Al Cameron, Manager – Investigations PSB Investigation Unit. Mr. Cameron is one of a three-person task force whom investigates claims from a resident in a neighbourhood who is concerned about their safety.

The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act works by holding property owners (that includes Landlords) accountable for threatening or disturbing activities that regularly take place on their property. These activities must be related to: unlawful drug use or dealing, prostitution and related activities, unlawful sale of liquor or intoxicating substances and giving or selling intoxicating substances to minors. The act refers to activities that are ongoing, not those happening occasionally.

The seminar was very informative and I believe that all of us learned a great deal. This Act supersedes the Residential Tenancies Act and it gave us, as Landlords, the information required to vacate undesirable tenants when their actions are not covered under the Residential Tenancies Act.
