Rent Increase Guideline Set for 2001

Manitoba Government News Release
September 7, 2000

Consumer and Corporate Affairs Minister, Ron Lemieux announced the 2001 rent increase guideline.  Manitoba's rent increase guideline for residential tenancies has been set at 1.5% for the year 2001. The guideline takes effect January 1, 2001 and will apply to most rental units, including apartments, single rooms, houses and duplexes.

"We recognize that the rental guideline is important to Manitobans," said Lemieux.  "[This] announcement continues to ensure affordability for tenants throughout the province while recognizing the increased operating
costs for landlords, such as natural gas and water."  Lemieux noted the following properties are exempt from the guideline:

Landlords can apply for a larger increase if they can demonstrate that the guideline amount will not cover cost increases they have incurred.

Rents cannot increase by any amount unless the tenant has been given proper notice at least three months prior to the effective date of the increase. With very few exceptions, rent can only be raised once every 12 months. In addition, tenants are provided the opportunity  to object to any increase in rent regardless of whether it is at, below or above the guideline by writing to the Residential Tenancies Branch within one month of receiving notice of the increase.
